The spectrum of therapeutic options in pelvic floor conditions has increased enormously in the last decade. Sacral nerve stimulation has transformed the treatment of patients, providing a tremendous option to stoma formation or conservative management, as have laparoscopic ventral rectopexy or perhaps more controversially stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) or Transtar to correct intussusception. Technologies such as implanted artificial sphincters are appealing and likely to gain wider application as technical issues relating to infection and device erosion are conquered; all this means that the delivery of a modern pelvic floor service is more demanding and complex than ever, but also appealing.
