A 68-year-old retired book keeper with alcoholic liver disease was seen in the gastroenterology clinic with symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux. Thirteen years previously, she had been found to have liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension and oesophageal varices, which had bled. She had then remained abstinent of alcohol, with improvement in her liver function. She had also had a mastectomy for breast cancer 3 years before.
