Chapter 28 discusses the interaction between cancer and nutrition. Nutrition is implicated in the aetiology of developing certain tumours, for example, a high intake of red and processed meats and colon cancer. Malnutrition at the outset of cancer diagnosis, or while undergoing its associated treatments, is a well-established poor prognostic indicator for survival. Not only do malnourished cancer patients have a worse survival, but they also have a lower quality of life, reduced performance status and increased risk of treatment-related complications. Optimizing and maintaining the nutritional status of cancer patients is consequently a critical area of their management, despite not being a primary focus of their cancer treatment.
