Chapter 8 discusses how the nutritional status of individuals with cancer is determined by the balance between two opposing processes: anabolism, defined as the constructive phase of metabolism, and catabolism that involves breaking down large molecules with the objective of releasing energy. These two processes are regulated by several hormones that work synergistically to adjust body weight to different scenarios by changing appetite, energy expenditure and utilization.
