Respiratory conditions account for ≥15% of primary care consultations in people aged ≥65 years. A third of these consultations (which also include all upper respiratory infections) are due to obstructive lung disease, split in a ratio of 3:2 between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Asthma is a rare cause of death in this age group, in contrast with COPD deaths. Obstructive lung disease is therefore the main subject of chapter 8, but it also highlights pneumonia, lung malignancy, and tuberculosis, which present life-threatening challenges and can be very demanding of primary care teams.
