Chapter 22 discusses psychiatry in the elderly, and how the principles of assessment are those of medicine in general, namely a comprehensive history (including third parties), mental state examination, medical investigation, diagnosis and treatment plan. A large number of instruments are available for screening and diagnosis but nothing can replace the skills of history-taking and examination and engagement with patients and carers. Indeed, immediate engagement will form the basis of the doctor–patient relationship that will provide the foundation of successful treatment and outcome.
