It is becoming increasingly evident that circadian genes and rhythms are linked to the regulation of mood and behavior. Genetic and molecular studies are providing better insight into the mechanisms by which abnormal circadian gene function leads to abnormal behavior and ultimately towards mood disorders. Treatments such as bright light therapy and total sleep deprivation clearly involve the resetting of the circadian clock. Even pharmacological agents used to treat mood disorders like lithium, valproate, and SSRIs also alter circadian rhythms. Although these treatments are effective for many depressed patients, in many cases patients still do not respond to these drugs or fail to take them because of their many side effects. An increased understanding of circadian rhythms and their role in mood-related disorders will help us provide better treatments in future.
