“The apostle to the idiots,” Edward Seguin (né Edouard Seguin) developed the first method, physiological education, for the education of idiots. Around 1850 he emigrated from France to the United States where his method influenced the first leaders of American institutions for idiots. He despised large institutions, but his method was technologically successful, but provided only a limited vision of life beyond the school.
