Australians are among the highest consumers of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the world, and like the wider population, older Australians in the community use CAM to maintain quality of life and manage chronic illness. However, very little is known about the use of CAM in the long-term care and residential aged care setting. The definitional debates about CAM are highlighted with the inclusion of lifestyle-type CAM “therapies” in the research literature; and while there is increasing use of CAM in the management of dementia, there is little evidence of efficacy to date. With aging populations worldwide, more high-quality research into the use of CAM in long-term and residential aged care, particular concerning efficacy and acceptance, is required.
