The high prevalence of disabling conditions among older adults may relate to lifestyle issues, including poor diet, being sedentary, and limited resources for managing stress. Stress management programs may improve mood, sleep, anxiety, and pain. Given their impact on autonomic pathways and immunity, health conditions such as cardiovascular disease may benefit as well. Areas of great interest include the possibility that mind-body approaches may impact the aging process, reversing telomere shortening, or have a cognitive enhancing or preserving effect. This chapter focuses on three mind-body approaches: yoga, tai chi, and meditation. Research is reviewed on the clinical and mechanistic effects of these programs. Pragmatic issues are discussed in helping seniors to avail themselves of mind-body programs.
