This chapter provides a summary of a landmark study in neurocritical care. Does therapeutic hypothermia increase rates of neurologic recovery after resuscitation from cardiac arrest within 2 hours after the return of spontaneous circulation? Starting with that question, it describes the basics of the study, including funding, study location, who was studied, how many patients, study design, study intervention, follow-up, endpoints, results, and criticism and limitations. The trial described in this chapter was one of two studies that demonstrated that active cooling for mild-to-moderate hypothermia improved the rate of favorable neurologic outcome and reduced mortality in the specified time frame. The chapter briefly reviews other relevant studies and information, and concludes with a relevant clinical case.
