Chapter 1 contains notes concerning the disease states of the three subjects in whom the conditions of the blood circulation in the brain were studied. These three human individuals suffered from acquired loss of cranial substance. Two of them were still alive and enjoyed a relative state of well-being at the time of original writing. The third subject, an eleven- to twelve-year-old boy named Giovanni Thron, died a few months after he was observed, and approximately 10 years after the trauma which resulted in the ectopy of his brain.
