The prevalence of chronic illness is increasing as the population ages. Despite differences in illness trajectories and difficulty estimating prognosis, patients with chronic noncancer conditions experience similar symptoms and have common needs as the illness progresses. Individuals with chronic progressive illness and their families benefit from an interdisciplinary palliative approach to care, and as the disease advances, hospice care should be considered.
