The first textbook of child psychiatry was written by Leo Kanner and published in 1935. Kanner had previously established the formally organized ‘child guidance clinic’ in Boston, USA in 1921. This service focused on the treatment of children presenting with delinquent behaviours and was the template for the child guidance movement whereby there was a focus on the use of ‘scientific method’ to manage behavioural problems....
