Chapter 8 aims to provide a framework in which to place the basic principles underpinning the design of a longitudinal assessment programme for training. We offer a broad evidence-based overview of available methods and their quality assurance to ensure programmes are ‘fit for purpose’. The structure offered supports the subsequent chapter, which outlines in more detail how assessment is keeping abreast of the challenges presented by changes in education.
