Radiotherapy uses high energy X-rays, gamma rays, or electrons to deliver ionizing radiation to patients with malignant disease. There are three ways in which ionizing radiation can be delivered:

1. external beam therapy—using a machine such as a linear accelerator, or cobalt machine;

2. brachytherapy—using a localized radioisotope implant; or

3. radionuclide therapy—using a systemic radioisotope preparation.

This chapter will look at the evidence for the use of these different modalities of radiotherapy in the management of cancer-related bone pain.
