This chapter introduces the phenomenon of cancer-related bone pain, which has received increased interest due to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of bone pain.The aim of the chapter is to provide an introduction to the skeletal system, and to the problem of cancer-related pain (also known as cancer-induced bone pain or CIBP). Subsequent chapters will discuss in detail the pathophysiology, clinical features, investigation, and management of this particular type of pain.
