Our understanding of trauma pathology, the effectiveness of interventions, and tissue recovery continue to improve. Much has changed in the system of trauma care in recent years in Britain; we have sadly also learnt from war zones and terrorism at home. A step change has been the improvement in the quality of our approach to research and the resultant evidence. It is therefore wholly appropriate, and I am delighted to see, that such new learning and treatment opportunities are central to the refreshing of these important standards for the management of open fractures. Their value lies now in their dissemination and adoption; I commend this book to all practising orthopaedic trauma and plastic surgeons.
