Musculoskeletal infections such as septic arthritis require prompt action. This chapter describes how to recognize the different conditions that can present as arthritis as a result of an infection and provides a detailed overview of issues to consider and how to support the patient encountering such problems. Medical emergencies such as drug toxicity, septic arthritis, and complications of inflammatory forms of arthritis are briefly described, and investigations and treatments are discussed. The chapter continues with guidance on related respiratory conditions such as pulmonary hypertension and breathlessness, and how to identify the conditions, the causes, and the management approaches.
