Plenty of evidence supports the benefits of healthy lifestyles on physical health and disease prevention. However, less attention has been paid to the significant impact of healthy lifestyles on mental health. This chapter gives an overview of the impact of four main lifestyle factors (physical activity, diet, substance use, and social network) on mental health. Other lifestyle behaviours (sleeping habits, nature and leisure activities, pet ownership, religion and spirituality, mindfulness practice, and contribution and services to others), which have close relationships with mental health, are also briefly mentioned. Lifestyles are important for improving mental health status and preventing mental health problems, which can result in significant public health gains at the population level.
