This chapter will describe normal and abnormal two-dimensional sonoanatomy of the mitral valve and explain how focused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS) can be used to screen for haemodynamically significant mitral valve obstruction or regurgitation. It will discuss the acute and adaptive changes that occur with these conditions and explain how to recognize them. The advanced section of this chapter will introduce how colour and spectral Doppler can be used to support the diagnosis in acute/severe disease.
