Considering that the techniques of neuroimaging map the function and the structure of the living human brain, it is plausible to consider them as the most appropriate techniques to generate biomarkers of psychiatric disorders. Starting from the history of neuroimaging techniques, the aim of this chapter is to review the current knowledge and the future perspectives of neuroimaging for future psychiatrists. The most developed brain imaging techniques are detailed and the most important approaches for analysing neuroimages are reviewed. Finally, special attention is paid to the specificities of task-based and resting-state fMRI protocols. In the future, it is highly likely that brain imaging methods used to explore the brain in vivo will pave the way to new applications for the clinical psychiatrist. An academic and clinical background in neuroimaging will most probably be required by early career psychiatrists in the near future, both for research and clinical practice.
