The respiratory chapter includes eight presentations of respiratory illness including; community acquired pneumonia, atypical pneumonia, exacerbation of COPD, TB, influenza, bronchiolitis, croup, and viral pneumonia. Each chapter discusses the presentation, examination, treatment, sample taking, laboratory methods, and preventative treatments such as immunization, for each, with particular focus on the relevant microbe in each case. Particular processes or techniques discussed in detail include the pneumococcal urinary antigen tests, sputum processing in COPD, the Ziehl-Neelson stain in TB, and multiplex PCR techniques. There is also a focus on PCP and its differential, the range of atypical mycobacteria and the history of influenza and its treatment.
