Effective team building and communication skills training is recognized as a major contributor to improving performance and patient safety. There is now a recognition that human factors training should be available for all healthcare professionals and the use of simulated environments for developing and assess these skills is expanding and their increasing utility is discussed. This chapter also analyses team dynamics and what makes an effective and functional team. The use of personality profiling and other techniques to improve teamwork are outlined and several practical aspects for running a successful team day are provided including ice-breakers, techniques for audience engagement, and effective facilitation.
