This chapter reviews the rationale and evidence for simulation-based learning in undergraduate medical education. In addition, we outline the expanding role of simulation in undergraduate medical education. Successful medical student simulation programmes demonstrate the clinical application of didactic content introduced elsewhere in the curriculum, providing an early exposure to clinical material and promoting critical thinking. Students appreciate simulation sessions with well-chosen objectives that are meaningful and timely within the context of the overall curriculum. For faculty, simulation provides an opportunity to develop unique skills that facilitate discovery and understanding. Instructors who encourage student discovery, rather than provide answers, optimize the experiential learning opportunity. Simulation programme leadership must set objectives, plan and pilot content, budget equipment and personnel, evaluate effectiveness, and secure institutional support in order to sustain a successful programme.
