The aviation industry has moved to fly-by-wire control of modern aircraft where computers control all of the basic flight handling, previously the domain of the pilot. Unfortunately, a number of major accidents have occurred where pilots have failed to recognize and react to fundamental issues and possibly suffered lack of skill in manually flying. This has resulted in a complete rewrite of training requirements and a programme which can only be accomplished in a flight simulator with upgrades required estimated around $354 million. The adoption of the new computer-controlled aircraft has allowed flight simulators to use the same software as the aircraft with greatly improved fidelity and lowering maintenance costs, and simulator technical committees have now amalgamated with those in the aviation industry. There has been ongoing development in all areas of flight simulation with a role which is now firmly established as absolutely essential.
