The formation of a connection between the OSCE candidate and the patient/actor is crucial for success, and empathy is a core skill essential in all patient interactions. This chapter explores this connection primarily from the perspective of empathy, considers emotional weight, and discusses the importance of body language and facial expression. There is a practical exercise designed for the purpose of exploring and distilling the power of empathy, so that it might be utilized in the OSCE. The chapter goes on to consider empathy tone, mirroring, and suggests ways to utilize these facets. There is a practical exercise to improve listening skills, and the chapter finishes with a few practical pointers and tips.
