This chapter describes the role of the findings of research into mental health and mental illness in transforming the mental health and well-being of service users. It considers all aspects of the research process, including the formulation of research questions, devising appropriate and relevant methods to address these questions, various means of collecting and analysing data, and the diffusion and dissemination of findings. It also describes different approaches to research and their underlying epistemologies, ethical issues in research, and how mental health nurses can use research to improve their practice. This information should enable mental health nurses to formulate and undertake well-designed research, and then translate the findings of that research into improvements in practice. The chapter also describes how to work in partnership with service users and carers, how to write proposals when applying for research funding, and how to use research to develop evidence-based practice.
