This chapter highlights the importance of basing mental health nursing on the best available and best possible evidence, where this evidence exists. In addition to introducing the concept of evidence-based practice, it discusses the advantages, limitations, and applications of such practice. It also describes how evidence-based practice is governed in health care in the UK, and how mental health nurses can use this evidence in their practice. Current issues relating to evidence-based practice in mental health nursing are outlined, as are the skills required of mental health nurses using best evidence. The role of regulatory bodies such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in upholding evidence-based practice is also considered. The chapter aims to provide the mental health nurse with a clearer understanding of the concept of evidence-based practice and how to use best evidence, while recognizing the challenges and limitations inherent in this approach.
