A haematologist-oncologist and palliative care physician for over 25 years, Janet Abrahm offers a US perspective on the evolution of palliative care and a comparative discussion on the differences between the US and European delivery of the model of care. It focuses on chronic pain; specifically, the challenge of sickle cell disease and the way in which the management of symptoms is a shared experience between clinician and patient. The benefit of hypnosis to palliative care is also discussed. It is argued that healing is best achieved through a process of connection with self and other and that we have a responsibility to sustain the ‘flame’ of compassion in the next generation of practitioners.
