The suicide rate is considered a statistically stable phenomenon for certain countries, regions and ethnicities. However, recently suicide rates have been increasing all over the world, especially among young people. Moreover, they are the prevalent cause of death in the 15–34 age group (World Health Organization 2001). In this sense, Russia is no different from other countries. Suicide is the fifth cause of all deaths in this country, and this fact calls for preventive measures.
On the basis of suicide rate, the WHO has recognized Russia as a country in an emergency situation, and the noticeable correlations between the prevalence of suicides and homicides seems to confirm this statement.
