Chapter 1 discusses radionuclide therapy, a unique form of radiotherapy where the radiation dose is delivered internally to the patient. The radionuclide can be administered in a number of ways: ingestion, intravenous infusion, injection to a body cavity or pathological space, such as the cavity of a cystic glioma, or direct injection into a solid tumour. Owing to the use of ‘open’ or unsealed sources this type of therapy is potentially the most hazardous use of ionizing radiation in hospitals because of the potential for contamination of the environment and high external dose rates.
