Cutaneous blood flow is regulated by sympathetic vasoconstrictor and vasodilator reflexes, parasympathetic vasodilator reflexes in the forehead and lips, and local autoregulatory mechanisms that involve sensory nerves and the vascular endothelium.

Nerve injury or dysfunction triggers compensatory adjustments (e.g. supersensitivity in vascular smooth muscle to neurotransmitters), and provokes sprouting of collateral fibres that sometimes make functional but inappropriate connections with denervated tissue. One unfortunate outcome of these compensatory adjustments may be to compromise nutritive flow through superficial cutaneous vessels....
