Sympathetic neural activity is difficult to evaluate in humans. Clinically, it is common to record sympathetic effector activities, such as heart rate, blood flow, or sweat production, and use the results to draw conclusions about the neural drive. Unfortunately, such data are difficult to interpret because effector organs react slowly to variations in sympathetic neural drive and because they may respond also to hormonal, local chemical stimuli, and mechanical stimuli. In addition, resting sympathetic activity cannot be evaluated by these indirect approaches. By using percutaneous microelectrodes to record action potentials from postganglionic sympathetic axons in human peripheral nerves (microneurography), many of these difficulties can be circumvented.
