This chapter is a personal reflection, recalling the effect of contracting HIV as a young man. The author focuses on the mental impact of the diagnosis and the varying emotions that accompanied it, such as vulnerability, anxiety, denial, repression, confusion, and shame over his sexual identity as a gay male. The diagnosis and its conflicting emotions led to the author to experience depression and substance-abuse. Despite several difficult years, the author has been able to work through and process his HIV diagnosis and offers the reader a message of hope and self-realization.
