The neuropathological changes seen in HIV-infected patients that are directly related to HIV-1 infection are discussed along with the potential relationship of these changes to the neurocognitive impairments seen in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). The chapter begins with discussions of the nomenclature of HAND and HIV-associated neropathological findings in disease. This is followed by a detailed discussion of neuropathological outcomes associated with HIV infection and clinico-neuropathological correlations. The NeuroAIDS "agenda" for future progress for the field is developed.
