THIS CHAPTER WILL review the more common causes of peripheral nerve toxicity, specifically their clinical features, differential diagnosis, and management. Diabetes mellitus and nerve toxicity from chemotherapy agents or human immune deficiency virus (HIV) medications will be covered, respectively, in Chapters 11 and 12. First, we will review the general principles of toxic nerve injury, and then the unique signs and symptoms of individual toxic agents. There have been substantial social and regulatory actions in developed countries that have altered the frequency of environmental and workplace toxic exposures. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, the regulation of potentially toxic chemicals is either rudimentary or nonexistent, and workers or consumers may still be exposed to dangerous levels of nerve-injuring chemicals (as reported, for example, in the New York Times article “Cheap Lead Paint Common on Chinese Goods”).1
