Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, and is the most common female cancer in many developing countries (Rock et al. 2000). Just a century ago, cervical cancer was the leading cause of death among women in the United States (Trimble et al. 2008). Over the past 30 years, widespread adoption of screening with Pap smears along with effective treatments for precancerous cervical conditions has cut the death rate from cervical cancer in half. The recent development of vaccines against the causative human papilloma virus (HPV) may reduce the prevalence of cervical cancer even further in the decades to come. Of significance too is the growing awareness of the role that certain lifestyle behaviors, diet, selected nutrients, and certain botanicals play in the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer.
