This chapter documents some of the developments in the social determinants approach since the original first edition chapter. It describes evidence-based commissions established by the World Health Organization, England, and the European Union— commissions that have drawn on the most relevant and up-to-date evidence base and have moved thinking along. The chapter describes some of the ways the social determinants approach has been implemented across the world, drawing on numerous examples, and describes some of the political and economic challenges to the approaches the commissions have advocated. Finally, the chapter explores potential future developments and opportunities for sustaining and developing momentum and activity to tackle gross health inequalities through action on social determinants of health.
