Chapter 18 discusses some general concepts regarding the clinical effects of respiratory muscle weakness in patients with neuromuscular disease and pulmonary function as well as sleep- related abnormalities; a select number of more common neuromuscular disorders will be reviewed in more detail, emphasizing acute and emergent aspects of sleep-related breathing events in these disorders. The chapter all addresses assessment and therapy for the sleep-related breathing disorders as well as urgent interventions to diagnose and treat sleep-related breathing dysfunction in neuromuscular disorders.
