The diagnostic evaluation of young children for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represents a public health issue of critical importance. Earlier diagnosis of ASD provides children and families with more opportunities for optimal benefit from intensive and specialized intervention services. This chapter summarizes a wide range of considerations related to the diagnostic assessment process in young children that can optimize the ability to help children with ASD and their families. These issues include not only those related to obtaining an accurate diagnosis in young children, but also those related to the assessment process in general and the provision of optimal clinical care to children and families alike.
