One of the most exciting areas of current autism science involves the search for infant behavioral markers of incipient autism. Prospective studies of high-risk infants have now identified several behavioral risk markers for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) risk as early as age 12 months. The primary purpose of early detection of ASDs is to prevent or mitigate the full onset of autism and its associated severe disabilities in multiple domains. Early detection science requires that early treatment science develop in parallel, so that tested treatments are ready for infants identified by early detection. This chapter discusses current interventions in ASDs; differences between preschool and infant learning; existing studies of infant-toddler ASD interventions; effective aspects of infant interventions in other groups; guidelines for infant-toddler treatment; and the Individual with Disabilities Education Act, Part C: Early Intervention for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities.
