Chapter 6 describes the contributions in literature and the large number of approaches, which describe different aspects of the consultation, that have influenced the authors’ thinking about what actually takes place in the consultation between the patient and the doctor. It then proposes a unifying framework that incorporates these ideas and encapsulates the approach to analysing and teaching the consultation.
