Chapter 37 discusses pre-term birth, including estimated weight or gestational age as basis for care, options, types of preterm birth (antepartum death and lethal malformations, multiple pregnancy, elective delivery, maternal and fetal pathology), the place of and preparations for birth, prevention of intraventricular haemorrhage, the route of delivery (cesarean section or vaginal delivery), epidural and other analgesia, elective forceps delivery, routine use of early episiotomy, and immediate care at birth.
