Chapter 30 discusses care of the fetus during labor, including clinical methods of fetal monitoring during labor, auscultation of the fetal heart, assessment of the amniotic fluid, continuous assessment of the fetal heart, fetal scalp blood acid-base assessment, comparison of auscultation and electronic fetal monitoring, effects on labor and delivery, effects on the fetus and neonate, the mother’s views, technique of electronic fetal monitoring, and other methods of fetal monitoring and diagnosis in labor, including the admission test and intrapartum fetal stimulation tests, as well as conservative management of ‘fetal distress’.
