A 45-year-old academic became anxious following a minor computational error at work. Despite reassurance, the anxiety continued for the next 9 days and was accompanied by difficulty sleeping. On the tenth day, he had difficulty accessing the computer and started to behave oddly, being unusually friendly to colleagues. Later the same day, he became sweaty and agitated and was admitted to hospital. There was no past medical history and no family history. He was on no medication, did not smoke, and took minimal alcohol.
