In this chapter several topics related to use of anesthesia in obstetric patients are discussed. Subtopics include anticoagulation in the pregnant patient, surgery in the parturient patient, and anesthetic management in patients with epilepsy or multiple sclerosis. Also discussed is anesthetic management in patients with cystic fibrosis or pregnancy-induced hypertension, including pre-eclampsia. Absolute and relative contraindications to using epidural analgesia as well as associated physiological changes are discussed. Risk factors for and management of uterine atony are addressed. Anesthetic management in patients with aortic stenosis or von Willebrand disease is also discussed. Each scenario is presented as a short, three- to four-question additional topic.
