Blastomycosis is a multisystem disease with a predilection for respiratory and cutaneous involvement caused by the dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. The disease equally attacks immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts, including those with HIV infection, and only infrequently occurs as an opportunistic infection. Primary infection is most often caused by inhalation of conidia or by contamination through skin trauma.
