Ischemic stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a major condition feared by older adults. Clinically identifying patients with cerebral ischemia is important so that appropriate, immediate treatment can be provided and stroke preventive strategies initiated. This chapter presents an overview of the more common causes and mechanisms of stroke.
