Chapter 9 deals with the development of the nervous system before and after birth. Embryologic development of the nervous system goes through several phases. After the induction phase follows the phase of cell proliferation. The primitive neurons then migrate to their final positions. After reaching their final location, they start to aggregate into the future nuclei. After migration the neurons start to differentiate. The outgrowth of axons ends with establishment of specific synaptic connections. A phase of selective cell death reduces the number of neurons that will persist. Use-dependent synaptic plasticity ensures the optimal development of neuronal connections. The term “sensitive (critical) period” is used of a developmental phase during which a certain skill, behavior, or mental capacity is normally acquired.
